”I’m a melancholy person who loves to laugh like all melancholy persons” – Françis Poulenc

The Flute Sonata of the French composer Françis Poulenc (1899-1963) was written for Flute and Piano in the winter of 1956-57 on commission from Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation at the U.S. Library Congress. It was first performed at the Scarborough Festival in June 1957 by flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and Françis Poulenc, and they performed it frequently until Poulenc’s decease six years later. In 1959 the composer selected the Sonata for his 60th birthday concert, as one of his favourite compositions.

In the present arrangement for Flute and Harp, the harp part barely differs from the original piano score, with minor adaptations in texture and use of enharmonical changes for more comfortable execution on the harp.
